Mission Statement
Music Therapy for Life was established for the good of the community:
- To provide preventative and rehabilitative Music Therapy services
at reasonable fees to individuals and organizations in the Kansas
City area
- To promote the proven therapeutic value of professionally
administered Music Therapy services from an educationally
qualified and clinically trained Music Therapist
Focus and Philosophy
Music Therapy for Life's primary focus is to continually educate the
public and provide quality, cost-effective Music Therapy services to
individuals who may benefit from them. My goal is to act in the best
interests of the individuals being served, under all circumstances. This
may result, at times, in actions which appear to be "non-musical" yet may
ultimately result in removing barriers to growth and development. These
actions are intended to complement the musical techniques and serve a
larger therapeutic purpose.
My philosophical approach to treatment could best be called eclectic,
selecting elements of various methods and sources, including movement,
art and drama. Over the years, this approach, with its emphasis on a
client-directed process, has been found most effective in enhancing the
natural development of abilities while maximizing independence and
generalization of skills. Spontaneity, flexibility and a desire to improve my
own knowledge and skills are fundamental to my treatment approach.
The key priorities of the Music Therapy for Life treatment are:
- Fostering a positive client/therapist relationship
- Empowering clients and families as well as the therapist
- Reducing fear and encouraging reasonable expectations
- Focusing on ongoing processes and techniques instead of specific
activities
- Applying neurological concepts to the use of music in treatment
- Approaching behavior as a form of communication
- Maintaining the dignity and integrity of each individual
